READ Luke 14:25-27 and Proverbs 6:16-19
Luke 14:25–27 NASB95
Now large crowds were going along with Him; and He turned and said to them, “If anyone comes to Me, and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be My disciple. “Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple.
Proverbs 6:16–19 NASB95
There are six things which the Lord hates, Yes, seven which are an abomination to Him: Haughty eyes, a lying tongue, And hands that shed innocent blood, A heart that devises wicked plans, Feet that run rapidly to evil, A false witness who utters lies, And one who spreads strife among brothers.
Defining some terms
Hate = not choosing what is wrong; not best; not God’s plan; connected to ability to actively choose
Love = selflessness; make a priority; giving

Jesus, the “Hater”

Jesus loved the world first, so we could love Him
1 John 4:10 NASB95
In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
The world hated Jesus first
John 15:18 NASB95
“If the world hates you, you know that it has hated Me before it hated you.
Satan rules this world
James 4:4 NASB95
You adulteresses, do you not know that friendship with the world is hostility toward God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.
World promotes:
Division, “racism,” immorality,

1) Jesus Hates the World

Jesus = good
Proverbs 6:16–19 NASB95
There are six things which the Lord hates, Yes, seven which are an abomination to Him: Haughty eyes, a lying tongue, And hands that shed innocent blood, A heart that devises wicked plans, Feet that run rapidly to evil, A false witness who utters lies, And one who spreads strife among brothers.
The world and Proverbs 6:16-19 list - the world’s values
Haughty eyes - self-importance, looking down on others
Lying tongue - more than lying, but tricking another into believing falsehoods
Hands that shed innocent blood - we are a nation of murderers
Heart devising wicked plans - Not reacting, planning, openly acting anti-God
Feet that run rapidly to evil - seeking it out, eager to get there
False witness uttering lies
One who spreads strife - not knowing peace, sowing discord
These are the values of the world; tied to the morality of self-importance
Thinking through the 10 Commandments, which ones would the world even agree with today?
First 4 are out, because they say to make God the priority
Honor father and mother - society can’t even define those terms anymore, and fathers aren’t needed anymore
Thou shall not murder - 930,160 abortions in 2020, not counting pills outside of clinics
Thou shall not commit adultery - fidelity in marriage is laughable in USA; actually, the faithfulness idea between one man and one woman is under attack
Thou shall not steal - most might still agree with this one, when it affects THEM - stores are closing because shoplifting goes unchecked
Thou shall not bear false witness - truth is relative today - self is what rules
Thou shall not covet - this one isn’t even thought about anymore
What about “family?”
It’s about priority
Choose Jesus over family, self
When Jesus is TOP priority, then the rest of your relationships line up
Your family (those here and those not) know your top priority
Your family should be encouraged to grow closer to God, because of you

2) Jesus Hates Death

Physical death was a consequence of sin
Spiritual death was a consequence of sin
(“Hates” - actively chooses against)
Hating death is choosing life - deciding FOR life
The world hates Jesus, death hates Jesus - b/c JESUS WINS!
The world is a sore loser (the world does lose) - the world offers no true peace
John 16:33 NASB95
“These things I have spoken to you, so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world.”
Death is a sore loser (death does lose, has lost)
1 Corinthians 15:55 NASB95
“O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?”
The world hates Jesus, and His disciples
John 15:18–19 NASB95
“If the world hates you, you know that it has hated Me before it hated you. “If you were of the world, the world would love its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, because of this the world hates you.

3) Love or Hate the World?

Questions, challenges:
Do you hate the world?
Does the world hate you?
If not, you’re too closely tied to the world
Do you love the world? John speaks of this in 1 John 2:15
1 John 2:15 NASB95
Do not love the world nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
Are you OF the world, or just IN the world?
John 15:19 NASB95
“If you were of the world, the world would love its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, because of this the world hates you.
If the world loves you, you’ve got problems - it means your life is about the world
Jesus’ life is not about this world, but about life not of this world
Doesn’t mean you have to give up things you enjoy
Just stopping making them more important than the LORD!
POINT: We are “of” the world, until getting saved. Then we are just merely “in” the world
Jesus was not OF the world - and His life showed it
Believers are no longer IN the world - lives should show it
Love or hate - the choice
Love the world, or love Jesus
Hate Jesus, or hate the world
When you decide to hate the world - you get the proper, Biblical perspective on values, family, all of life!
Jesus’ life was (and is) all about conquering the consequence of sin, death
He hates death; He chooses life, and invites you to do the same
He invites you to be part of the kingdom not of this world in John 18:36
John 18:36 NASB95
Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, then My servants would be fighting so that I would not be handed over to the Jews; but as it is, My kingdom is not of this realm.”
To love Him, is to hate this world
To love Him is to become a citizen of His kingdom - invite is open
Be like Jesus - Hate death by choosing life - eternal
If you have done that, embrace it
If you need to, don’t wait.
Jesus suffered, died, and then crushed death - just for you
Now you get to choose what your life is about - you, or Him
